Grading Using Interactive Rubrics in Blackboard

Welcome

The following is a guide for using Blackboard's interactive rubrics to quickly and easily grade your students' assignments.

Using the Grade Center

First, you will need to access the Grade Center in Blackboard. Go to your course's page and select "Grade Center" from the Control Panel menu in the lower left corner of the screen (see the image below):

The Grade Center lists the students enrolled in the course, organized by last name (listed in the first column). To the right of the students' names, there is a column for each of the graded assignments currently built into the course.

Scroll to the assignment you need to grade using the scrollbar at the bottom of the grade information bar. A green box with an exclamation point indicates that an assignment has been submitted, but still needs grading (see the image below):

Mouse over the green box in the assignment column. A button with two down arrows will appear in the right side of the cell (see below). Click on this button and select "View Grade Details" from the dropdown menu that appears:

This opens the Grade Details page. If a grade had previously been given to this assignment attempt, the green exclamation point would not appear; you could use the other options in the lower right corner of the page to clear the attempt ("Clear Attempt) or edit the grade previously awarded ("Edit Grade").

Because this attempt has not yet been graded and still needs grading, you will select "View Attempt" (see below):

Viewing and Grading the Assignment

From this page, you will be able to view the assignment submission. Under "2. Review Current Attempt," you will see a link to the assignment submitted by the student listed in the "Attached Files" section. Click on this link to view the submission (see below).

Note that grading a discussion board post works essentially the same way as described here, except there will not be an attached submission for you to review.

After you have reviewed the attachment in Microsoft Word (or whichever appropriate program for the file type), return to Blackboard to grade the attempt. Under "3. Grade Current Attempt," click on "View Rubric" to grade it using the interactive rubric that has been created for the assignment:

The rubric will open in another window. Use the radio buttons to select the scores you wish to give for each criterion, and feel free to add specific written feedback as well:

Below the rubric, a line labeled "Raw Total" provides you with a calculation of the total points you awarded above. When you are done awarding points and writing feedback, click the "Save" button to close the rubric window:

Now, the "Grade Assignment" page will show the score you awarded the submission in the "Grade" box. If you want to make notes to yourself about your grading process for this assignment, you can add those in the "Grading Notes" box, but you don't have to. When you are done on this page, click the "Submit" button:

Last, But Not Least...

You can now go to the Grade Center and see the score you gave to this student's assignment:

Follow this same process for all subsequent graded submissions - as you can see, it makes grading fast, easy, and simple!
